Val Buren Nance Jr., 81, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 18 at Ash Creek Baptist Church, 300 S. Stewart St., Azle under the direction of White’s Azle Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
Visitation will be held that morning from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church.
Val was born Dec. 30, 1931, to the late Val Buren and Ruby Elizabeth Hewitt Nance in Florence, South Carolina. He graduated from St. John’s High School in Darlington, South Carolina. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for four years on active duty from 1951 to 1955 and then in the reserves from 1955 to 1959. He met and married Eureta Jackson on March 9, 1957, and they raised two sons together. He received his B.S. degree majoring in social studies, minoring in English and Spanish from Howard Payne College in Brownwood. Val was licensed to the Gospel Ministry on Dec. 28, 1958. He received his degree in theology from Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. He graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth with a Masters of Religious Education Degree. He pastored churches in Texas and Oklahoma and taught school.
Val was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Angallee Funderburk and Polly Ann Stokes; and brother, Robert Hewitt Nance.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 56 years, Reta Nance; children, Jay Nance and wife, Mary and Jon Nance and wife, Mariza; grandchildren, Jamie Canales and husband, Sergio, Gavyn Nance and Ashley Oxborough and husband, Mike; great-grandchildren, Matyx Canales and Max Oxborough; siblings, Priscilla Nance Cribb and husband, Rufus and Samuel Angus Nance and wife, Jane; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
